A 37-year-old woman was employed by an Orange County, New York company which manufactured paper bags. She operated a machine which produced thousands of bags a day; but it was prone to jamming. The manufacturer did not properly place safety devices and appropriate warnings on the machine and there was evidence of tampering with interlocks. The plaintiff sustained degloving and crush injuries to her non-dominant hand. Due to jurisdictional issues, this matter it was litigated outside New York State and settled before a Federal Mediator for $1.66 million dollars.
